Why we built Ailoo
One ride.
Changed everything.
This is not a marketing narrative. It is the true story of a cancelled ride, an unfair fine, and the problem that pushed us to build a different kind of transport platform for Saudi Arabia.
Start the storyThe moment everything changed
Abdul needed a ride.
It was an ordinary afternoon in Riyadh. He opened one of the biggest ride-hailing apps in Saudi Arabia — the kind valued at billions, backed by the world's largest funds. He booked a ride. The driver confirmed. He waited on the pavement.
The driver arrived
The driver saw him.
And cancelled.
The car pulled up. Eye contact was made. The driver tapped his phone — and cancelled the booking on the spot. No glitch. No mistake. A deliberate cancellation, face to face, in broad daylight. Abdul stood there. No car. No explanation.
Then the system spoke
Fined 30 riyals. For a ride he never took.
The app charged him anyway. He filed a complaint. The support team replied — not with an apology, not with a refund. They charged him an extra 30 SAR as a cancellation penalty. The driver cancelled. Abdul paid the fine. The platform kept everything. This was not a bug. This was the product working exactly as intended.
We left the office
We went outside.
We talked to people.
Big companies don't do this. They sit in glass offices calculating TAM, LTV, unit economics. They model the market. They never meet it. We did the opposite. We walked the streets of Riyadh. We sat with drivers. We asked riders how they actually get to work every single day. What we heard stopped us cold.
The hidden economy
100,000 daily rides.
All on WhatsApp.
Hundreds of thousands of Saudi workers arrange their daily commute through WhatsApp groups. Every single morning. A driver posts a message. Riders reply. Money changes hands in cash. No insurance. No accountability. No protection if something goes wrong. This market was enormous — and completely invisible to every platform, every investor, every analyst writing reports from a conference room in San Francisco.
Nobody was solving this
Every expert
looked past it.
The big platforms knew this market existed. They chose to ignore it — the margins weren't clean enough, the users weren't the right demographic, the WhatsApp riders didn't fit the pitch deck. Meanwhile, real people were taking real risks every day with zero protection. We saw a problem that mattered to millions. And we saw that no one was coming to fix it.
So we decided
"Nobody is coming.
We're building it."
Not because it was the easiest path. Not because investors were lining up. Because the problem was real, the people were real, and the injustice was inexcusable. Abdul and Hatim had seen enough — fines for rides never taken, drivers losing 30% to platforms, and 100,000 people starting every morning with zero protection. Enough.
Ailoo is born
0% commission.
Forever.
Drivers keep 100% of every fare — always. The daily commute market gets its first real, safe, regulated platform. Riders pay flat prices with no surprises. What started as one man standing on a Riyadh pavement, fined for a ride he never took, became the foundation of something completely different. This is why Ailoo exists.
